Social impact made simpler

About State of Life

Demonstrating social value is increasingly important for all types of organisation. In March 2020 we launched our simple, cost effective methodology and technology and a year later the 2021 HM Treasury Green Book supplementary guidance (chapter 5 on measurement and evaluation) explicitly recommends our methodology:

“use validated measures...that are consistent with existing measures” as this “makes it possible to compare findings with other approaches and could help to influence future programme and policy design”.

At State of Life, we aim to democratise and demystify social impact analysis to produce transparent, credible results. Our online tools and services make it easier and more cost-effective for both public and private sector organisations to measure and demonstrate the social value they create. So they can focus on making people healthier and happier.

State of Life is a joint venture with Reason Digital and has the support of former head of the civil service Lord Gus O’Donnell

Launched on 4th March 2020.

We launched on 4th March 2020 with the help of David Knott (Director at the Office for CiviI Society in DCMS) and Lord Gus O’Donnell. And then a little thing called Covid-19 happened. We were fortunate to launch and we have thankfully been busy since.

The core team (there are quite a few more). L to R

Iulian Gramatki - Economist and Data scientist. Iulian completed a Ph.D. in applied econometrics at Goethe University Frankfurt and leads on econometric methodology and data science. He’s fast, direct and incredibly precise.

Will Watt - State of Life founder. In 2014 Will led a study to value sports volunteering which has become a case study in Lord Gus O’Donnell’s ‘What Works Wellbeing’ centre. He swims and swears too much.

Lizzie Trotter - Lizzie is a social impact measurement specialist with experience across a range of sectors and contexts, and has worked in wellbeing analysis since 2013. Lizzie was Head of Social Impact at HACT (a think/do tank for the housing sector). Lizzie makes it all make sense.

Matt Haworth - co-founder and director of Impact and Reason Digital, Matt brings a wealth of technical experience around using digital as a force to drive social good. Matt was recently voted Digital Entrepreneur of the Year at the Digital Entrepreneur Awards. His dad owns a pie shop.

We often collaborate with some superb specialists. Economist Howard Reed at Landman Economics, Pro Bono Economics, Mime Consulting, Kiln, Professor Paul Frijters and Lark who help translate the technical detail into creative and compelling content.
