We are hiring

Work with us as economist and data analyst (remote)

About State of Life:

State of Life is at the forefront of measuring and implementing HM Treasury's latest guidance on wellbeing economics. We are named advisors on the 2021 HM Treasury Supplementary Guidance on measuring and valuing wellbeing. We have trained government economists and clients on applying this guidance at a practical, everyday level.

Lord Gus O'Donnell describes us as 'at the coal face' of wellbeing economics. And we like that description - day to day, we work with charities, NGOs, and businesses running projects that they hope will improve people's lives. We help them measure and report on these projects' impact and social value, and how cost-effective they are.

State of Life has developed a mix of methodology and technology that makes data collection uniquely practical and applicable. You will help us in our work with organisations to:

  • Work out what they do and what they want to achieve (theory of change, logic models)

  • Measure the impact (outcome frameworks, survey development and deployment)

  • Report the economic value of any positive impact in line with the HM Treasury guidance.

Our clients include Girlguiding, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Sport England, Tearfund, National Churches Trust, parkrun, United Nations, Youth Sport Trust, Tideway, Essex Council and more.

What you will be doing

  • You'll work within our small team to analyse and report on the data we capture with our clients.

  • You will review literature to establish gaps in evidence for a particular intervention.

  • We work with a data capture technology 'Impact' that you will use and deploy for clients. This will involve developing outcome frameworks and key research questions, and the building and testing of surveys in the platform.

  • You will attend client meetings to answer technical questions, help develop research, gather information necessary to inform the research design, ensure the client understands our approach, and report on the technical elements of our work.

  • You will understand the conceptual and practical application of wellbeing economics and the drivers of wellbeing as they are captured in UK data.

  • You will lead on the analysis of the data when collected. This will involve using econometric software, data cleaning, regression or difference in difference analysis (possibly compared to a control group).

  • You will deliver training to clients who want to increase their internal data analysis capacity.

  • Finally, you will document the findings in an understandable way to our clients and the project funders the project.

What we need from you

  • You will have a thirst for pioneering evidence to discover what makes people's lives happier and healthier.

  • A degree (Phd, Masters ideal but not essential) in Economics or a closely related quantitative social science discipline (or be within 1 year of completion at the start date)

  • Knowledge of wellbeing, public economics, and/or labour economics

  • Advanced analytical and technical skills in processing and analysing large complex datasets, including panels

  • Understanding of experimental and quasi-experimental methods

  • Experience of the design, execution and write-up of independent research projects

  • Experience in the use of STATA and other econometrics software

  • Excellent understanding of statistical methods

  • The ability to interpret and analyse patterns or trends in data.

  • Ability to work independently of close supervision but being an active team member who is happy to work with others, some of whom are not technical

  • Strong organisational skills to work with data providers, project stakeholders and your team members

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey technical material in non-technical terms for policy and other non-academic stakeholders.

  • Experience in communicating research issues with decision-makers outside academia.

Time, place and money - we will make it work for the right person.

  • We work remotely and flexibly. You can be anywhere in the world, but the UK is preferable as that is where most of our clients are.

  • You can be full-time or part-time.

  • We offer competitive salaries to the market, and are open to different approaches to contracting.
